AI Is Beginning to Change Legacy-System Migrations

Legacy CRM complexity can delay modernization before a migration even begins.

On September 9, Microsoft introduced Dynamics 365 Activate, an AI-powered migration tool designed to analyze the data, processes, customizations, and dependencies inside an existing CRM environment. Its initial public preview focuses on organizations moving from Salesforce to Dynamics 365.

The tool is intended to reduce the manual discovery work required to understand years of system decisions before a migration. Its analysis can help implementation teams decide what should be preserved, simplified, redesigned, or left behind.

The announcement matters beyond Microsoft and Salesforce. It points to a broader shift in enterprise modernization: AI is beginning to support the discovery and planning work that can make large system migrations slow and difficult.

The technology may help organizations understand their current environments, but it cannot decide how the business should operate. Leaders still need to determine which processes create value, where data needs improvement, and which integrations must remain reliable.

The business takeaway: AI may accelerate migration analysis, but successful modernization still begins with clear decisions about processes, data, and integrations.
